CAMPUS SUMMARY
Since its inception in 1916, the Swedish Institute has graduated thousands of students of all ages and backgrounds who have gone on to pursue satisfying careers as Massage Therapists and, since 1996, as classically trained Acupuncturists. Over the years we have seen an explosion of interest in complementary health care in general, and in massage therapy and acupuncture in particular. We have also seen and participated in the promotion of many changes in the professions: the early advent of state licensing in massage therapy and the more recent advent of state licensing in acupuncture; a title change from masseuse/masseur to massage therapist; a tremendous increase in the numbers and kinds of employment opportunities for acupuncturists and massage therapists; and a burgeoning research base documenting the health and relaxation benefits of our work. In this environment of change, the Swedish Institute has maintained a parallel process of ongoing change, redesigning our training to prepare students to work more effectively and compassionately with a wide range of clients in a wide variety of employment settings.
